Page Speed
You have a website. And you’re publishing great content. But if your pages are slow, people will run away!
How fast does your website need to be? The need for speed is greater than ever before.
Back in 2009, Akamai said if your page takes more than two seconds, people will leave your site. And once they leave, they will not come back.
Think about that. If your page takes more than two seconds, you’re repelling people.
The industry expects your pages to be even faster. The industry expectation is less than one second.
And Google Webmasters has the highest expectation of all. Way back in 2010, Webmaster Maile Ohye said you should aim for half a second:
QUESTIONS
How fast do your webpages load?
How can you speed them up?
MY OWN SOLUTION
For this website, I use a CMS called Blot.
It is the fastest CMS I’ve ever found. And that by a wide margin!
Most of my pages load in about a quarter of a second!
And at Google PageSpeed Insights, it scores an unheard-of 100%!
I REALLY recommend Blot!
RESOURCES
Working through these issues and making improvements will require that you talk with a web developer.
But in the meantime, here are two ways you can get a sense of your site’s speed:
TIME IT
a. Use a timer
- Go to a page at your site.
- Prepare a timer.
- Click to reload the page.
- At the same moment, start your timer.
- As soon as anything starts to reload, stop your timer.
That is your page speed. Is it less than two seconds?
b. Use Developer Tools
Most browsers have Developer Tools.
Use those Developer Tools to time the loading of your webpage.
GOOGLE PAGESPEED INSIGHTS
Go to Google PageSpeed Insights.
Give it the URL of a page you want to test. Click Analyze.
- It will test your page speed and award a score.
- It will analyze the content of your web page, and generate suggestions on how to make that page faster.
If nothing else, the score will give you a rough sense of your page speed.
